Microtia
Here are the details.
Microtia is a congenital deformity of the outer ear where the ear does not fully develop.
It can affect one or both ears. Microtia is often associated with an extremely narrow ear canal or absence of the ear canal.
Repair of microtia is completed in two separate surgeries. The 1st stage involves taking rib cartilage from the child’s chest shaping the cartilage into an ear and implanting it in a skin pocket where the ear is locate don the child’s head. The 2nd stage is performed 6-12 months later where the ear is lifted for better alignment and projection for a more natural looking position. A skin graft may be used during the 2nd stage surgery.
